Note
|
Edmund Cunninghamwas born the second son of Thomas and Margaret Cunningham's twelve children. Edmund (Ned) spent his early years at Wallace, near Ballarat. Along with other members of his family he obtained his primary education at Ormond Catholic School (Springbank). After leaving school, Ned initially worked as a farm labourer with his father and older brother Mathew. In the late 1880's Ned and Matt worked as contractors and labourers on the construction of the new Ballarat-Melbourne Highway, a project vital for the continued development of the gold mining Ballarat region. In 1897, Ned and Matt moved to Werribee and worked on the Werribee Park Estate owned by Thomas Chirnside. Having difficulty finding work in the late 1900's, Ned and brother Thomas went to Kalgoorlie in search of gold. In order to supplement his income while searching for the lucky strike Ned worked for a time building the water main between Perth and Kalgoorlie before returning to Werribee about 1900. |
