Farrel, Michael
"THE FARRELL FAMILY
by Floreine [Marsh] Campbell
I have been asked to write a story about the family of my maternalgrandparents. My mother has been gone almost 15 years, so I will have torely on memories of stories she told me.
Her parents, Michael and Laura House Farrell, were married inIllinois sometime in the early 1870's. Their two eldest children, Mae andBert, were born there.
The family moved to Iowa, where my mother, Sarah, and a son, Ervin, were born.
From Iowa, the Farrells turned south and settled in Missouri, whereanother child, Nellie, joined the family. When Nellie was three weeksold, they began the trek by wagon train to Nebraska. Grandmother'sparents, Bradford and Sarah House, and their other two daughters and twosons were also on this journey.
The Michael Farrells settled on a homestead a few miles east andsouth of Westerville in the Clear Creek Community. They made very fewtrips to Ansley or Broken Bow, as Westerville was the local trading post.
They built and lived in a sod house for many years. The twoyoungest children, Levert and I.aura, were born here. My mother wasabout eight years old at the time they settled here, so she spent almostall of her school days in a sod schoolhouse. I believe it was called theKimball School.
Grandfather Farrell died about 1900. His grave is one of the firstones in the Liberty Cemetery. The three older children were grown andgone from home at the time of his death. Mae was married to Edgar Graham, and Sarah, my mother, was now Mrs. Herbert Marsh.
Grandma was a very resourceful pioneer woman, and she stayed on thehomestead and finished raising the four younger children. She and herson, Ervie, farmed together for many years.
Later Ervie married Elizabeth Mytton, Nellie married Alfred Jonesand Laura became Mrs. Lee Woodworth.
Grandma Farrell was a charter member of the Christian Church atLiberty, helping to organize the church and Sunday School. She servedthe Church as Sunday School Superintendent for almost 30 years.
It was a great joy and pleasure to visit her. When she died in 1930,her children and grandchildren realized that they had lost a loving andhelpful friend.
She is buried beside her husband just a few miles from the oldhomestead, where they had come to make a family home in the New Land.
Levert, the youngest son, and the only one of the immediate familystill living, resides at a Veteran's Rest Home at Rushville, Nebraska."
