1 Jan 1786 - 20 Oct 1822.Richard Mulholland was born around 1786 in the townland of Eden, near Maghera, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. He came from a family that had long had ties to the military with his forebears having served on the Williamite side during the Siege of Derry 1688-89, successfully defending the city against the Jacobite besiegers.
Before the Battle of Waterloo, Richard had been active in the Peninsular War and was promoted from the rank of Ensign to that of Lieutenant after the Siege of Badajoz in March 1812. He was sent to North America during the later stages of the War of 1812, likely seeing victories, like Bladensburg, as well as defeats, like New Orleans.
