Note

Death reg NSW BDM 1897/12676

Robert and Nancy arrived in South Australia on May 13th 1855 on the ship Europa, as assisted passengers. The Europa was a ship of 1099 tons, the master was Captain Ridley and it left from Birkenhead/Liverpool on the 30th January, sailing via the Cape Of Good Hope.(Papers re the voyage at PRO SA GRG 35/48/1855). His occupation was listed as labourer, his religion C/E. Robert & his parents Henry and Maria York are from Eden, Tamlaght OCrillly, Co Derry, Northern Ireland. Henrys cousin, William, married Maria`s sister, Matilda, their family emigrating to New Zealand. Another cousin, David, has also married another York sister, Eliza, their family moving to Scotland. The Mulhollands originally came from Belfast where they owned hemp or flax mills,(This was told to me by my grandfather, Leslie Mulholland, who was Roberts grandson.) Robert and Nancy came to Australia for the gold rush. They lived around the Bendigo gold fields having their children in Sandhurst, Whitehills and Bendigo, before moving to Deniliquin, New South Wales, then to Hay in 1876. They then moved to Burrabogle and later to Coonong, which was owned by the late Sir Samuel McGaughey (who was also from Northern Ireland, his brother came to Australia on the Europa with Robert and Nancy.) The family then moved to New Goree, and from there to Narrandera in 1879, where Robert took up his building trade again. He erected many fine old buildings in Narrandera.(Information taken from his obituary,Narrandera Argus Friday Jan 29 1943)
