Henry Adams of Braintree, Massachusetts
Henry Adams (b1583) was the first settler in this part of the country. He came from England to America about 1634 with his wife, 8 sons & 1daughter. He settled at Mount Wollaston, later called Braintree, nowQuincy, Massachusetts. On 24 Feb, 1639-40, the town of Boston grantedhim 40 acres of land for the ten persons then composing the family. Hisoccupations were yeoman & maltster. He continued living there until hisdeath-about 6 Oct 1646, according to town records. The inscription on acolulmn erected in memory by his gr-gr-grandson, John Adams, secondPresident of the US, reads:
"In memory of Henry Adams, who took his flilght from the Dragonpersecution, in Devonshire in England, and alighted with eight sons nearMt Wollaston. One of the sons returned to England; and, after taking timeto explore the country, four removed to Medfield and neighboring towns, and two to Chelmsford. One only, Joseph, who lies here at his left hand, remained here, who was an original proprietor in the township ofBraintree, incorporated 1639. This stone and several others have beenplaced in this yard by a great-great-grandson, from a veneration of thepiety, humility, simplicity, prudence, patience, temperance, frugality, industry, and perseverance of his ancestors, in hopes of recommending animitation of their virtues to their posterity."
A later opinion, also by John Quincy Adams, is that he came with otherfellow settlers, from Braintree, Essex co, England. It has been sincewritten & proven in numerous books & genealogies, the family was fromBarton St David, Somersetshire, England. He married Edith Squire in 1609at Charlton Mackrell, Somersetshire, Eng. She was the daughter (b 1587)of Henry & Edith (?) Squire of Charlton Mackrell. Henry died in 1646 at63y, leaving a will, which was probated in Boston 8 Jun 1647 listing hiswife, 5 of his sons & daughter Ursula. In 1651, Edith Adams married JohnFussel in Medfield Mass. Ursula married 1) Stephen Streeter &subsequently 3 other husbands. Increase Nowell was the securitor.Increase was the husband of Parnell Gray, sister of Kathryn Gray, whomarried Thomas Graves (Rear Adm). Thomas & Kathryn were parents ofRebecca-the wife of Henry's 3rd child Samuel. Increase was a prominentperson in the Massachusetts Bay Company, also. This is surely afascinating family to be kin to.
