Note

Two of William's daughters, Mary and Sabra, had sons born out of wedlock. Mary later married the father of her son, David Greer, but the son Elihue was raised as a Sturgill. The census records of 1830 and 1840 indicate that their grandfather William Sturgill raised both of these boys. - pg 52
MARY STURGILL's first child, Elihue, was born out of wedlock. His father was David Greer, who later married Mary. The 1830 census of Grayson County, Virginia, USA shows that Mary and the child were still living with her fathers family. When Mary's father, William, went to KY 1831-32 Elihue went with him and was raised as a Sturgill. Mary and David made their home in Ashe County, North Carolina, USA, probably on the farm William still owned there. The census of 1850 shows the children listed except Elihue.
