Weis' "Ancestral Roots. . ." (98:27), (98A:27).
Per Cockayne's "Complete Peerage", he was styled "de Conches". He was asmall boy when his father died in 1162 and he took no part in publicaffairs until after the accession of King Richard I, with whom he went oncrusade. He distingished himself at Richard's victory at Arsuf. He wasfaithful to the new king, JOHN, and enjoyed his favour. During thestruggle between the kings JOHN of England and PHILIP of France forcontrol of Normandy, he supported JOHN and recaptured his castle atConches and held it briefly until PHILIP eventually dispossed JOHN of allNormandy. This resulted in Roger too losing all his Norman lands. KINGJOHN granted Roger considerable estates in England.
Roger left at least 3 sons:
1.) Ralph
2.) Roger (d.1227/8)
3.) Richard, a clerk, who became treasurer of Angers (d.1252).
