Note

A Jacob Dircksen Rosenkrantz was known to be living in Amsterdam,Holland, in 1552. His coat of arms was the same one used by Erik'sbranch, displayed at the top of this page. It seems reasonable to assumethat this Rosenkrantz was one of the untitled members of the Danish noblefamily, who had emigrated to Holland in search of work. There were notmany Rosenkrantzes living in Holland at any time, and Rosenkrantz is nota native Dutch name.

Jacob is believed to be the father of Dirk (Deik) Jacobsen Rosenkrantz,Captain
of the Civil Guard of Amsterdan, Netherlands. Jacob was a "Calvinist" in a
very "Roman Catholic" area and went north into Protestent areas.

HISTORICAL NOTE: In the late 1500's King Philip II "inherited" theNetherlands
as part of his father's vast empire. Philip levied burdensome taxes on the
Dutch and Belgians, who, resented having their money support the Spainsh
throne. Worse, he systematically persecuted the Dutch Calvinists and
Anabaptists. In 1566 he introduced a six-year reign of terror, attemptingwith
sword and Inquisition to annihilate those who would not convert.Thousands of
Dutch Protestents were put to the sword in the merciless campaign.Thousands
more fled northward from the conquered southern provinces, and many ofthese
sought refuge in the New World.
