In the writings on "The Troubles brought to Valenciennes on account ofHeresies," one notes that the names De la VIGNE and CUVELIER (the latterthe French equivalent of the Dutch CUVILJE) frequently occur in the indexof victims of the Spanish Inquisition. Surviving relatives likely fledreligious persecution to tolerant Holland. There, a (8860) Jean de laVigne served as Amsterdam's Walloon dominie from 1585. In France, a Cuvelier was a barrel-maker. The name Vigne means "vine" inFrench, and is most often associated with vineyards for making wine. Thehistory of this ancient Namur family traces its ancestry as a family ofBelgian origin before the year 1100.
