Merit Gilberts Standish (descended from Myles Standish through Edmund Augustus, Erastus, Nathan, Israel, Samuel and Josiah) was born January 8, 1842, in Wellington, CT. He married January 20,1869, Elvira McConnell, who was born June 29, 1844, daughter of J. E. and S. H. McConnell. He enlisted September 1, 1861 and served nearly three years with the First Minnesota Volunteer Infantry. He participated in the battles of Ball's Bluff, Yorktown, West Point, Fair Oaks, Savage's Station, Peach Orchard, White Oak Swamp, Malvern Hill, South Mountain and Antietam. He transferred to the First Regular Cavalry per General Order Number 144 from War Department and participated in General Stoneman's raid, April 29 to May 5, 1863, and the general engagements of Beverly', Ford and Upperville, where he was taken prisoner, June 21, 1863 and confined in Libby Prison, Richmond. He was released on parole after three days imprisonment. A short time afterwards he returned to his regiment in Virginia and was soon discharged. Resident in Oakland, CA, he was cashier of the Bank of California. His children were: Edith M. b. February 16, 1870.
