Note

Created the first Prince of Wales by his father in 1301, he was murdered at Berkeley Castle, Gloucestershire, by means of a red-hot spit being thrust into his bowels on the orders of Roger Mortimer, Earl of March, and his wife, Queen Isabella, who was Mortimer's mistress. Isabella and Roger hoped to run the country through the young Edward III but the lad had other ideas. Isabella ended up in a nunnery and Roger lost his head!
