He was elected on 22nd November, after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. He took the oath of office in the same plane that carried the body of JFK back to Washington. He was re-elected in 1964 over Barry Goldwater, by a popular vote of 43,129,566 to 27,178,188, and an electoral vote of 486 to 52. Hubert M. Humphrey was his vice-president.
