Thomas, eldest son of Edward by his second wife was born 1st June 1300 at Brotherton, near Pontefract while his parents were on their way to Scotland. Thomas was a sickly child and it is said that his health was restored when an English nurse was substituted for the French woman entrusted to him by his mother. Edward 1 had destined the earldom of Cornwall for Thomas but after his death, Edward 11 conferred Cornwall on his favourite, Piers Gaveston. However, in September 1312 his father granted to Thomas and his brother Edmund jointly, the castle and honour of Stigul (Chepstow) and in October 1311 granted Thomas seisen (i.e. possession by freehold) of the honour. On 16th December 1312 Edward created Thomas Earl of Norfolk and he also obtained the grant of all lands in England, Wales and Ireland that had escheated (lapsed) on Roger Bigot's death (5th Earl of Norfolk). On 10th February 1316 Thomas was created Marshall of England and in 1319 acted as warden of England when his father was campaigning against the Scots. Thomas was knighted 15th July 1319. Thomas saw action in 1321 at the siege of Leeds castle (Kent) and the ultimate submission of Mortimer. In May 1327 he was ordered to raise troops against the Scots yet in September 1326 had been one of the first to join Queen Isabella on her landing at Orwell. He was bribed to accept the rule of Mortimer and Isabella but soon became disenchanted. |
