Hereditary Keeper of Berwick Castle, Warden of the Northumberland coast, Joint Warden of the Marches, commissioner for peace negotiations with the Scots, Keeper of Roxburgh Castle, Sheriff of Roxburghshire and Marshal of the Royal Army at Calais, he saw extensive action in the opening phase of The Hundred Years War.
