Hereditary Keeper of Berwick Castle, Warden of the Northumberland coast, Joint Warden of the Marches, commissioner for peace negotiations with the Scots, Keeper of Roxburgh Castle, Sheriff of Roxburghshire and Marshal of the Royal Army at Calais, he saw extensive action in the opening phase of The Hundred Years War. He served in the King’s 3rd Division at the confrontation of Flamengerie (La Flamengrie) (1339) (battle was not actually joined) and at the Battles of Sluys (1340) (English victory over French), also the failed Sieges of Tournai (1340) and of Nantes (1342), Crécy (1346) and Winchelsea (1350)(naval victory over the Spanish). |
