‘The Great Alan’, the eldest son, was party to an unsuccessful dispute with the Bishop of Durham in 1100. It was resolved in the Bishop’s favour by William II (Rufus). His illegitimate son, also Alan, fought for David I, King of Scots, at the Battle of the Standard (1138).
