MARTH A DAVIS
Crossed the Atlantic on a sailing ship and crossed the coun tr
y by wagon train. A baby girl, Martha was born on the pl ains i
n a
thunderstorm and driving rain at Wood River, Hall , Nebraska. Sh
e reared eleven of her twelve children to ma turity (Mary died a
t
age 4). Her children learned both Eng lish and Welsh. They set u
p new homes five different times , in Salt Lake City, Heber City
,
twice in Wallsburg and on e in Vernal During one winter, her hus
band John was in Ech o Canyon worKing on the railroad. At the
time he left, the re was only 50 lbs of flour to keep her famil
y of11 aliv e for nine weeks. Her son Heber writes "We had no m
eat, ve
getablesor fruit. Mother often told me as she used the fl our
, 'it always seems notto have diminished'" She made br ead, spu
n wool,
knitted socks, made soap and candles and al l the other the othe
r frontier chores. She maintained he r testimony and taught her
children the gospe
