DEATH CLAIMS MRS. BENNION Wif of First Settler in Raylorsville
, Succumbs. ACTIVE TO THE LAST Day Helped Push a Hand Cart Acr
oss the Plains.
"Mrs. Esther Wainwright Bennion, a pioneer and the wife of the f
irst settler in Taylorsville, died at the residenceof her son i
n that place MonDay night at the ripe age of 84 years. Death wa
s the result of old age and general debility.
"Filled with an activity too great for her years and constitutio
n, Mrs. Bennion has insisted upon leading an active life even i
n her old age, and on MonDay was able to go about the house fro
m room to room without assistance. She had been failing for som
e time past, though, and in the early eveing it became apparen
t that her end was near. Her family and children gathered abou
t her bedside. Death claimed herabout 11 o'clock.
Walked Across the Plains
"The death of Mrs. Bennion marks the close of a remarkable caree
r, and the passing of one of the pioneers who walked and pushe
d a hand cart from Missouri to the valley of the Salt Lake. A
s one of the First settlers in that part of the county, she ha
s been a prominent figure in Taylorsville for years and was wel
l known throughout the state.
"Mrs. Bennion was born in Liverpool England in 1817. In 1840 sh
e becamea member of the Mormon Church, and that same year, sh
e came to this country,with the first emiGrants brought over b
y the Mormon Church. She and her husband, John Bennion, went t
o Nauvoo and when the Mormons began their march across the plain
s in search of home in 1847, they piled their belongings int
o ahand cart and started forth on the terrible journey.
Lived on Pinoneer Square
"After arriving here she lived for a time on the old Pioneer squ
are, but later she and her husband moved across the river to wha
t is now the town of Taylorsville, and it is said they were th
e first residents in that portion of the county. Mrs. Bennion h
as been a resident of that place ever since. She leaves eight c
hildren. "The funeral will be held from the Taylorsville ward m
eeting house on ThursDay at 10 o'clock.
Esther Wainwright had no minor children when John Bennion died s
o there was no need for probate for her.
