John Macaulay was born in Ireland in 1827. He married his wife Anne Domville in January 1856, shortly after their marriage, the couple moved to Liverpool that same year. John gained employment in the City's Police force, after producing a glowing testimonial from the Irish force. John and Anne went on to have 7 children; John, Cecelia, Ann, Charles, Alfred, Florence & Eveline. Eveline was to die at 20 months of age, and is buried in the grave, with her parents. John & Anne's son, Charles James Ma… Read More caulay, married Deborah Jane Hayden and then went on to have 4 children; John, Charles, Alfred & Margaret. Margaret Lena Macaulay died at the age of 4 months, and Charles George Goldsmith Macaulay died at the age of 16 years. Both of these children, are also buried in the grave along with their paternal Grandfather and Grandmother. Charles James Macaulay, the father of the two previously mentioned children died in Egypt in 1937 at the age of 66 years, but his wife Deborah Jane died 2 years previously, in 1935 at the age of 72. Liverpool Mercury, for Tuesday, September 12, 1899 MACAULAY, Sept 9th, 107 St Domingo Vale, John, ex-inspector Liverpool police, aged 72, interment at Everton Cemetery tomorrow. After seven years service in the Royal Irish Constabulary he came to Liverpool early in 1856 and joined the police force where he remained until October 1892, when he retired on a pension. In 1857 he gave evidence before the House of Commons committee relative to the transfer of the town dues from the Corporation to the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board, which took place on the 1st January 1861. He was promoted to detective rank and whilst occupying that position tracked and apprehended the Spaniard, Jose ALVAREZ, who had murdered a man named HARRISON, the occupier of the house in Grenville St, South where the notorious Gleeson WILSON committed so many murders. In 1865 he was made inspector and in 1874 he apprehended CORRIGAN, who murdered his mother in Chisenhale St. For his work he was complimented by the jury who tried the prisoner at the assizes. The public in the same year to mark their acknowledgement of his services presented him with a valuable testimonial. |
