Note

Information received in May 1915 from JCCC, Bristol.

The Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre (JCCC) co-ordinates investigations following the discovery of human remains of British service personnel killed in World Wars 1 & 2. This work involves attempting to identify the casualty and trace their next of kin or descendants. In accordant with policy in force at the time of death, the MoD does not repatriate the bodies of those who died prior to the mid 1960s, but will arrange an appropriate burial/military funeral in the country concerned

Regarding the discovery I
told you about, Wilfred was onboard Lancaster LL721 when it left RAF
Linton-on-Ouse on 27 January 1944 for a raid on Berlin. The aircraft
was intercepted over the target area and attacked 3 times, mortally
wounding one crew member before the aircraft exploded mid-air and
crashed near Karcha Rausslitz, north/north east of Nossen. The aircraft
burned on the ground for several hours before the wreckage was removed
by a unit of the Luftwaffe.

Amazingly, three crew members survived
the crash and were taken prisoners of war, while the remainder all
sadly lost their lives. Two of them have known graves in Berlin, whilst
Wilfred and one other were not found and are commemorated on Runnymede.
Last September the remains of an airman, thought by the excavators to
be Sgt Lawson, were recovered. I must tell you that excavations and
research in Germany are conducted by civilian/private individuals and
groups; as such there is no scientific archaeological information,
research or conclusion available. As I explained, 2 crew members remain
missing and whilst the excavators believe these remains to be those of
Wilfred, we cannot confirm this to be the case. In making contact with
you, we hope to be able to carry out DNA testing to provide definitive
proof one way or the other. For our records, can you confirm that you
would be happy for our DNA contractors to send you a DNA kit in due
course and let me know where it should be sent? Once I've received
confirmation that you're happy for the DNA testing to go ahead I will
start the ball rolling. If you have any other questions in the
meantime, please do contact me.
