Note

James sees to have been sent to Portland, Maine, USA in 1901 after a problem with the law at an early age, [for example pinching fruit]. He appears to have had a hard but quite exciting life later on, hunting and trapping, then visits to Canada. I am sure he is homesick though as he hints at in the letter of 1920. He was a Paiter and never married, dying in Coos, New Hampshire in 1965.
