Note

1816 20 Oct. Thomas, filius Roberti Gudgeon et Catherinae Towsey, conj. natus 18. Sponsores, Robertus Cull, Maria Cull.

Thomas died on the train on his way to or from church. He was found dead in the train at Richmond Station later that day. The parish priest was not willing to bury him in consecrated ground beCause he didn't know whether Thomas had been to

church.

Resided in Eden Cresent, Auckland East

Thomas emigrated to New Zealand with his family arriving in the ship "Berkshire" on 10 January 1850 at New Plymouth. He spent the first 9 years in the Taranaki District. Farmed at Mt Edgecumbe (New Plymouth) and Otama, Taranaki before going to
Wanganui and founding the firm of Gudgeon and Co. auctioneers and land agents. He moved to Wanganui just ahead of the war breaKing out at Taranaki.

The war arrived at Wanganui in 1864 and he joined the Wanganui Militia. Appointed quartermaster and commissariat officer with rank of Lieutenant. In 1869 he left Wanganui for the Thames goldfields where he remained until 1879. He then retired to
Auckland while he authored his books.

Travelled to Melbourne to visit family about 1888 and stayed in there till his death in 1890.

Arrived New Zealand 10 Jan 1850 on the SS Berkshire, having resigned appointment after seven years in the Income and Property Tax Office, Somerset House, London.

Some claims have been made that Walter Edward Gudgeon was the true author of these books. (Eg Dictionary of New Zealand Biography). In W E Gudgeon's biography it is said that Walter complained that he was doing so much editing on his father's
books that they should be considered as his works. Editing is not the same as Authoring and people frequently over-rate their contribution to works. Hence I still consider them TWG's works, albeit with substantial editing by WEG.
