The 1930's depression must have been pretty hard on them. The family always lived a very frugal existence, and were careful to save and spend wisely.
During his years of ill health he became a pRofessional stockmarket investor (starting with money inherited from his father in-law). He and his wife bacame reasonably wealthy through careful investment and expenditure.

He was active in Lawn Bowls, playing at East Camberwell and Ringwood Bowling clubs. He won many bowling trophies.
