Note
|
Birth Certificate 1902 105171 Leah Madge was the only surviving child of Edward and Mary Jane. All her siblings were either stillborn or died in the early months of life. When she was about ten her sister Gwendoline Mary survived for about ten months. Gwendoline Mary was the name she chose for her only daughter. She never really stopped grieving for her only son John. I still remember her reading his letters from England most nights when I lived with her. She wrapped them up in the black and gold satin ribbons of his old school colours. I have kept some of these, but mostly they were pretty bland. He was not allowed to talk about anything much because of wartime censorship. After the war she stayed at La Ferte St Cyr with Marius Thouvais, who dragged John's body from the water after the plane crash. She was very short, busty lady. She always said she was five foot tall, but I think she was a couple of inches shorter than that. And short tempered with it. Sun Friday Dec 21 1951 "Mrs.LE Estell, licensee of the Royal Hotel Springwood has done her bit for the fire fighting squads on the mountains. Since the bushfires began she has daily provided free food and refreshment to the firefighters. She's fed as many as 500 at one meal some days working 18 hours without a break." Madge is the Great Great Grand daughter of James Hines and Sarah Edwards, the Great grand daughter of Edward Hines and the grand daughter of Sarah Ann Hines and Frederick Fitzallen. Madge and Jack lived together until her death in 1969 Harbord Hotel |
