Note

In 1560 he became duke of S?manland, and in 1568 he aided his Brother
John III in deposing their older Brother Eric XIV. When John died in 1592
and was succeeded by his son, King Sigismund III of Poland, Charles became
regent for his absent nephew. Charles, a Protestant, aroused the populace
against his nephew, an ardent Roman Catholic. Sigismund landed in Sweden
in 1598 and was defeated by Charles at St?eBro. Sigismund was formally
deposed in 1599, and Charles in 1604 yielded to popular demand and was
crowned king of Sweden. Charles was an ambitious, ruthless, but able
leader, who was unpopular because of his costly wars with Poland, Russia,
and Denmark. He was succeeded by his son Gustav II Adolph.
