One of the claimants to the throne of Castile and Leon, he waged three
disastrous wars from 1370 to 1382 against that realm. Ferdinand's reign
otherwise was notable for wise legislation designed to advance agriculture
and navigation. Because he left no male issue, his Death precipitated a
civil war in which his illegitimate half Brother, John I, seized the
throne of Portugal.
