Note

Conrad IV (1228-54), king of Germany (1237-54), son of Frederick II, the
last great Holy Roman emperor of the Hohenstaufen dynasty. During his
father's lifetime, in 1237, Conrad was elected king of the Romans while
Frederick ruled Italy and Sicily. Pope Innocent IV deposed Frederick II in
1245, and the papal faction of princes in Germany elected Henry Raspe,
count of Thuringia (1202?-47), as antiking in 1246. Germany was beset by
conflict, which continued after Raspe's Death with the election in 1248 of
another antiking, William of Holland. After the Death of Frederick II in
1250, William and Conrad both claimed the succession as Holy Roman
emperor, but neither was crowned. Conrad succeeded his father as king of
Sicily and consolidated his position by conquering his native Apulia and
the cities of Capua and Naples in Italy. Conrad was the last of the
Hohenstaufen dynasty; his son, Conradin (1252-68), never became king.
Germany and the empire had no recognized ruler for 19 years following his
reign. The period has thus been designated the Great Interregnum of the
Holy Roman Empire.
