Note

Henry (of Portugal) (1512-80), king of Portugal (1578-80), son of King
Emanuel of Portugal. Henry was educated for the Priesthood and at about
age 27 was consecrated Bishop of Evora and appointed grand inquisitor of
Portugal. Under his direction the Inquisition became a powerful force in
the country, and Henry was made a cardinal in 1545. He acted as regent for
his nephew, King Sebastian (1554-78), during the minority of the Young
king. In 1578 Henry succeeded to the throne when Sebastian was killed at
the Battle of the Three Kings in Morocco. Henry left no heir, and the Avis
dynasty ended with him. Philip II of Spain succeeded him as king of
Portugal.
