Note
|
He served an apprenticeship with Messrs. D & R Taylor, wholesale merchants (groceries), The Diamond, Coleraine, and for some time he was their travelling representative. In 1888 he succeeded to the ownership of the business and carried on business until about 1910. John married Jane Walker Lynn in Portstewart Presbyterian Church on the 23rd of November 1880; a minister who assisted at the wedding, Rev. T. Thompson of Glendermott, Londonderry, was reported as being a cousin of the bridegroom. Between 1888 and 1910, he had a wholesale merchants business (groceries) on The Diamond, Coleraine. He married twice and had 4 sons & 1 daughter. Between 1894 and 1899, he was a member of the Town Commissioner's board for Coleraine. He then served as a councillor on the new urban council. He left Coleraine to live in Edinburgh before settling in Belfast from about 1916. He died in Belfast and is buried in Coleraine cemetery. According to the 1901 Census, he lived on Lodge Road, Coleraine. |
