Note | The Illegitimate son of Robert I, Duke of Normandy, he became duke of Normandy in 1035, and K ing of England from 1066-1087. He visited England in about 1051, when Edward the Confessor may have promised to make him his heir. In 1064, Harold Godwinson, Earl of Wessex, was shipwrecked off Ponthieu in France, and taken to William, who made him swear to uphold the Duke's claim to the English throne. In 1066, and on hearing that Harold had been crowned king, William invaded England, and defeated Harold at the Battle of Hastings. He was crowned in London on Christmas Day, 1066. Between 1066 and 1072, he crushed the opposition of the Saxon nobles. He built castles, and called in most of the English titles and estates, and reassigned them on a feudal basis, to his Norman followers. In 1085, he ordered a general survey of lands, their value, and their holders, that resulted in the Domesday Book. He died at the Convent of St. Gervais near Rouen, France. |
