Note
Sir Merrik Raymond Burrell, 7th Bt., CBE, JP and High Sheriff for Sussex, CA, Lieutenant-Colonel late Inspector Remounts, formerly Lieutenant 1st Royal Dragoons, served in the South African War 1899-1901. Chairman of the Board of Governors for theRoyal Veterinary College 1929-46 and trustee of the Royal Agricultural Society (President in 1936), he was a Gold Medallist for distinguished services to agriculture. The main part of the house at Knepp was destroyed by fire in 1904 and although paintings by Holbien and other masters were lost, Sir Merrik restored the house soon afterwards. Sir Merrick sold West Grinstead Park Estate to his friend J. P. Hornung in 1913, where it eventually became part of The National Stud. The house was demolished in 1970. From 1930, Sir Merrick lived at Floodgates, in the southeast corner of the parish.
